Welcome to the ninth edition of our monthly newsletter, The Inkling! Keep reading for news from the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition, including advocacy updates, summer highlights, students opportunities, a reporting spotlight, and advice on making the shift from high school to college journalism.

🎤 Students Testify at City Hall

In June, student leaders testified in front of the City Council Education Committee on Resolution 0372, calling on the New York City Department of Education to provide support for a student newspaper at every high school. The resolution has grown to include 18 co-sponsors!

🗞 Summer at YJC

This summer, we are working in four key areas:

1. Engaging with schools to prepare for the release of the Journalism for All application (coming this fall!)

2. Working with City Council Members to secure school nominations and co-sponsorships for Resolution 0372

3. Meeting with private funders to support the first cohort of Journalism for All

4. Growing our coalition, building out our social media, and preparing for fall programming

This week, we’ll be releasing our YJC Student Voice Champions series, highlighting Council Members who have supported the resolution.

📌 School Nominations

Nominations are still open for the first cohort of Journalism for All! Participating high schools will receive access to a groundbreaking new journalism curriculum developed by experts at CUNY’s Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, teacher professional development, and additional support and resources from YJC member organizations.

You can nominate a school (including your own) at the link below. A nomination does not commit a school to anything. Once you fill out the form, we will contact the school directly to share more information about the initiative, including instructions on how to formally apply.

✏️ Featured Student Opportunities

Radio Rookies

Radio Rookies is for young New Yorkers, ages 15 to 24, who are interested in storytelling and audio. Participants receive journalism training and a stipend as they produce a personal, reported audio story. This workshop will focus on the issues that matter most to young people ahead of the 2024 election. Application due August 6.

NYJW Teen Journalism Fellowship

In this paid fellowship, participants (ages 15-18) will be reporting on news within their communities through the lens of a Jewish teen. Participants will be provided training and support in writing your article/multi-media piece. Application due September 10th.

CLARIFY News Reporting Internship for NYC High School Students - Fall 2024

This program offers training in public service reporting and news writing. Participants will collaborate in teams, and under the guidance of an instructor, receive training to report on a public service story. Student work has in the past been published in City Limits. Sessions will be held virtually two days a week, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with some on-site field trips scheduled throughout the program. Students will receive a stipend. Applications due September 9th.

The Teen Magazine Publishing Opportunity

The Teen Magazine is a digital magazine for teens, by teens, with an international audience and 130K+ monthly pageviews. As writers for The Teen Magazine, teens can become published authors, receive peer feedback, interview public figures (NYT best-selling authors, Netflix stars, business/nonprofit CEOs, etc), and so much more. Many of our teen writers have gone on to publish articles and reach 100K+ total pageviews, speak face-to-face and interview public figures, and collaborate with established brands. TTM also offers mentorship in the editorial industry, leadership experiences, and opportunities to build a writer's portfolio.

If you are interested in expanding your academic and writing resume, apply and mention that you were referred as part of the TTM Recruit Initiative. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

“The transition from high school to college journalism is nothing short of exciting. There are more resources, a larger staff and much more to cover. The most important step is to become involved with your on-campus paper as soon as you can, because it is the ultimate segue to internships. If you start off as a writer for your first-year, it’s likely that you’ll find your way up the editorial ladder by the time you graduate–which looks great to recruiters.”
