Applications Open: UbuntuHarlem Magazine Internships

A variety of internship positions are now open at UbuntuHarlem Magazine for creatives and collaborators ages 14–25 with ties to Harlem. This youth-led digital publication uplifts local voices to explore art, culture, and community power through the lens of Harlem’s past and present. Write the World Op-Ed Competition
Application Deadline: Monday, February 23
Young writers ages 13-19 are invited to submit a 400-1000 word piece to Write the World’s Op-Ed Competition that changes someone’s mind on a topic they believe is important. The winner will receive $100 and Runner-Up and Best Peer Review will each receive $50. NYC Votes Youth Ambassador Program

New York students ages 14-18 passionate about democracy and civic engagement are eligible to apply for the 2026 NYC Votes Youth Ambassador team. This is a hybrid, paid opportunity to develop leadership, public speaking, and community organizing skills. The Moth: High School Story Lab

Youth ages 14-22 are invited to create a 5-8 minute documentary film that tells a true story of someone who challenged the status quo, embraced a new way of thinking, or imagined a different future, and, in doing so, helped others thrive. The Clinton Hill Library is hosting a workshop for young journalists ages 12 and up on how to pitch for and write a newspaper article with reporter Elsie Carson-Holt of the Indypendent. Students will have the opportunity to write an article of their own to be compiled into a mini newspaper. Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists

High school sophomores and juniors interested in journalism and media production are encouraged to apply to Robert W. Greene’s Summer Institute, a six-day residential workshop hosted by Stony Brook University’s School of Communication and Journalism. The program introduces students to core skills in news reporting, writing, editing, video and still photography, and podcasting. Several need-based scholarships are available. Young storytellers in grades 4–12 are invited to enter NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge with a 3–8 minute submission. Top entries will be broadcast nationally on NPR programs, with winning schools receiving an official trophy and certificate. In honor of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, a new award category will also recognize stories that reflect on what it means to be an American today.
