Chalkbeat’s 2024-25 Student Voices Fellowship Chalkbeat is thrilled to launch applications for its 2024-25 Student Voices Fellowship. This school year, we will be running our teen essay-writing program in New York City and, for the first time, in Detroit. We launched the paid fellowship three years ago to hear from teens, in their own words, about their lives and schools. Since then, fellows have explored the immigrant student experience from multiple angles, opened up about facing racism and Islamophobia, told us about the joys of embracing who they are, and described what it’s like to navigate grief and loss while still in high school. Fellows will receive a $1,000 stipend. Application due August 30th. Service Learning Project Youth Board Calling all civically-minded NYC high school students! Want to make a real impact on your city and develop valuable skills? Join the Service Learning Project (SLP) Youth Board! Projects will including driving voter registration, advocating for increased student voice in school policies and decision-making, pushing for the creation of youth-led action civics classes and after-school programs, launching campaigns on the social causes and issues most important to you, and more. We meet remotely every other week during the school year, making it easy to fit into your busy schedule. Our experienced facilitator will support you, but you and your fellow board members will drive the decision-making process. No prior experience is required – we're looking for passionate, motivated students who want to make a difference. NYJW Teen Journalism Fellowship In this paid fellowship, participants (ages 15-18) will be reporting on news within their communities through the lens of a Jewish teen. Participants will be provided training and support in writing your article/multi-media piece. Application due September 10th. CLARIFY News Reporting Internship for NYC High School Students - Fall 2024 This program offers training in public service reporting and news writing. Participants will collaborate in teams, and under the guidance of an instructor, receive training to report on a public service story. Student work has in the past been published in City Limits. Sessions will be held virtually two days a week, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with some on-site field trips scheduled throughout the program. Students will receive a stipend. Applications due September 9th. The Teen Magazine Publishing Opportunity The Teen Magazine is a digital magazine for teens, by teens, with an international audience and 130K+ monthly pageviews. As writers for The Teen Magazine, teens can become published authors, receive peer feedback, interview public figures (NYT best-selling authors, Netflix stars, business/nonprofit CEOs, etc), and so much more. Many of our teen writers have gone on to publish articles and reach 100K+ total pageviews, speak face-to-face and interview public figures, and collaborate with established brands. TTM also offers mentorship in the editorial industry, leadership experiences, and opportunities to build a writer's portfolio.
