On Tuesday, September 16, YJC hosted an unforgettable J-Day at City Hall, in partnership with the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus (BLAC) of the New York City Council. Over 200 students and teachers from more than 20 schools convened on the steps to celebrate progress and push for more support to institutionalize journalism programs citywide. At the press conference, YJC student leaders took the stage alongside Jere Hester of CUNY Newmark and prominent city officials, including Council Members Rita Joseph and Kevin Riley, DOE Superintendent Alan Cheng, the Office of NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and NYCPS Chief of Student Pathways Jane Martínez Dowling. These leaders voiced their public commitment for expanding Journalism for All, and we are working with them to ensure those commitments lead to concrete action. Following the press conference, students, journalists, and YJC partners had the opportunity to network with one another. In the afternoon, a special meeting of the BLAC convened, and groups of students met with the offices of Council Members to push for increased funding.
