This week: Youth in Focus- NYC Mayoral Candidate Forum

This Thursday, April 17 at 5:00PM ET, join Next100 and partners for a youth-led, youth-focused forum with NYC mayoral candidates!

Student journalists: this virtual event is an opportunity to report on each candidate’s plan to prioritize and support issues affecting NYC youth if they are elected. You’ll be introduced to the city's political landscape and the varying issues that young New Yorkers want solved!

YJC hosts screening of Breaking the News with filmmaker Princess Hairston

Last month, YJC student leaders brought together student journalists and industry professionals from across the city for a screening of Breaking the News, a PBS documentary about the creation of the groundbreaking digital news startup The 19th*. After the screening, filmmaker Princess Hairston joined us for a dynamic Q&A about efforts to challenge the white male status quo in mainstream media, moderated by YJC student leader Autumn Wynn.

Student Opportunities

Stay tuned for a special edition of The Inkling later this week for a list of summer journalism and advocacy opportunities for high school and college students! For now, here are a couple from our members:

City Limit’s CLARIFY Summer Youth Program
Deadline to apply: Wednesday, April 30
City Limit’s CLARIFY (City Limits Accountability Reporting Initiative for Youth) program is a six-week, paid summer internship in public service journalism. Gain skills in research, journalism writing, public speaking, teamwork, and meeting deadlines. Open to NYC public high school 10th-12th graders and college freshmen.

Youth Communication: Summer Writing Workshop - Making Change
Deadline to apply: Friday, May 9
Join a group of 10-12 young people who will explore “making change” in Youth Communication’s 46th annual summer writing workshop. For six weeks, students work on a memoir-style or reported story alongside professional editors and participate in writing lessons, discussions, field trips and group activities. Participants will publish at least one story in our online magazines and will receive a stipend for successfully completing the workshop. Open to local youth ages 15 to 20.
