Last weekend, YJC attended the Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association’s Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia, and SJAG leaders presented a panel on Revitalizing Youth Journalism in the Media Capital!

🏛️ Legislative Update

The City Council is currently reviewing legislation related to student journalism equity. You can help make sure the City Council understands the importance of the issue - sign up to contact your Council Member!

Int. 1057: Student journalism programming at the city’s high schools will be heard by the Council’s Education Committee on December 4th. Introduced by Council Member Rita Joseph in September, the bill would require the DOE to report on the availability of journalism programs at every high school each school year. By collecting and publishing data on journalism programs across schools, the DOE can reveal disparities in access to journalism opportunities. This data would highlight areas where resources and support are needed most and can lead to targeted interventions. A bill like this also reinforces the shared value that student journalism is an essential part of education, deserving of equal access.

High schools would also need to distribute information to students regarding the availability of journalism programs at the beginning of the school year. So, middle school students will know which high schools have journalism programs when they apply.

Come out and support students testifying at the public hearing for the bill on Wednesday, December 4 at 1PM!

PBS News Student Reporting Labs - Seeking Student Hosts
Deadline: Friday, December 6
PBS News Student Reporting Labs is looking for two new student hosts for the fifth season of On Our Minds, an award-winning teen life podcast.

Other ways to get involved with On Our Minds:

• Produce an audio story or interview, pitch an idea by Jan 10

• Submit original music to our theme song contest by Feb 14

• Submit a “Dear On Our Minds” voicemail message, rolling submissions

NY Association of Black Journalists is Accepting Applications for Teen Journalism Program, First Take
Deadline: Friday, December 6
First Take provides high school students with hands-on training in print, broadcast, online, and photo journalism through sessions led by media professionals. NYC high school students of all ethnic backgrounds are welcome to apply.

YC Teen Writing Contest
Deadline: Friday, December 13
Youth Communication is sponsoring a writing contest for young people. For this month’s contest, they want to hear your perspective on cell phone bans.

NBCU Academy The Edit - Digital Storytelling Challenge
Deadline: Friday, December 13
Join a nationwide contest by submitting the best news report from your classroom. Three middle school classrooms and three high school classrooms will be selected as winners to receive prizes from NBCU Academy and Adobe.

PBS News Student Reporting Labs College Climate Reporting Fellowship
Deadline: Tuesday, December 31
PBS News Student Reporting Labs is seeking stories about how young people are working on solutions to respond to the climate crisis and other environmental issues. Selected college student journalists will produce video stories and receive a $500 stipend, professional mentorship from SRL staff, and access to professional equipment.

hs.credit Student Beta Program
hs.credit is a new platform for showcasing high school academic achievements! Selected students receive expert guidance to refine a project of their choosing, publish their work, and earn $500!

Submit a question to the Teen Advice Podcast
Arcana Audio and the documentary film company Lismore Road are piloting a new advice podcast for teenagers. They are looking for teens to submit questions to be discussed in pilot episodes!
